Vocal Exercises for Better Vowel Formation

Proper vowel formation helps singers create a more unified sound, but learning to form vowels consistently takes practice.

Building on his earlier lesson about good vowel formation, Steve Petrunak demonstrates several practical exercises that singers can use to improve their technique. With attention to vowel shape, tongue placement, and repetition, these exercises can help individuals and ensembles develop a more consistent sound.

Steve Petrunak is a founding board member of CLEF and retired director of music from St. Blase Catholic Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Steve has worked in music ministry for more than 50 years and is the co-author of “Managing Music Ministry: Beyond Notes and Chords.”
