A diphthong is a sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable, and they are everywhere in the music we sing in liturgy. How we sing them impacts both the clarity and the beauty of the piece of music. In this video, Katie Barton shares tips for singing diphthongs using examples from two liturgical songs.
Katie Barton has served in parish music ministry for 28 years at various parishes in Kentucky and Ohio. She is also the director and organist for the Diocesan Choir for the Diocese of Covington at the Cathedral Basilica and the director of choral activities at Northern Kentucky University where she conducts three choirs and teaches choral music education classes.
