How to Avoid Scooping in Singing

Scooping is when a vocalist starts below the pitch and slides up to the correct pitch. While scooping in singing is sometimes a stylistic choice, it can also be a sign of poor vocal technique. Katie Barton shares an exercise to increase awareness and improve technique to avoid scooping in singing.

Katie Barton has served in parish music ministry for 28 years at various parishes in Kentucky and Ohio. She is also the director and organist for the Diocesan Choir for the Diocese of Covington at the Cathedral Basilica and the director of choral activities at Northern Kentucky University where she conducts three choirs and teaches choral music education classes.
